Answers to the most common questions. And if yours isn’t among them: just write to me.

Automatic check-in

Why doesn’t GeoLicious check me in automatically?

Three things have to come together:

  • In the app, “Active” is turned on under “Settings” → “Automatic Check-in”.
  • Automatic check-in is turned on for the place itself.
  • In the iOS Settings under “Apps” → “GeoLicious” → “Location”, “Always” is selected and “Precise Location” is on.

Without “Always”, iOS cannot wake the app in the background. Arrivals and departures then only show up once you open GeoLicious.

How many places can GeoLicious monitor?

You can mark as many as you like – but iOS lets an app monitor only 20 regions at a time. GeoLicious therefore always picks the 20 marked places closest to you, and rearranges them once you’ve travelled a fair distance. Places with a stay in progress keep their slot, so the check-out isn’t lost.

Why did a stay end late, or not at all?

Departures are reported by iOS, and not always on time – for instance when the device has been resting for a long while or has poor reception. If GeoLicious misses one, it ends the stay as soon as a later location shows you’re no longer there, and dates it to that moment.

You can also do it by hand: press and hold the stay in the list and choose “End stay”. Start and end can be corrected in its details at any time.

What radius should I choose?

The default is 100 metres, adjustable from 20 metres to 5 kilometres. Between tall buildings and indoors, positioning is often less precise; 150 to 200 metres helps there. If two places are close together, try to keep their regions from overlapping.

What does “Automatically delete short visits” do?

Automatically recorded stays shorter than 5 minutes are discarded again – when you just drive past a place, for example. Stays you created yourself are always kept.

Does it drain the battery?

No. The regions are monitored by iOS itself, just like location-based reminders. GeoLicious doesn’t need to be running for it and doesn’t track your location continuously.

Can I change or turn off the notifications?

Yes, under “Settings” → “Notifications”. You can turn them off entirely, pick a different sound, and switch the app icon badge on or off. Automatic check-in works without notifications too.

Your data and iCloud

Where is my data – and who can see it?

On your device and in the private database of your own iCloud account. There is no developer server and no account; nobody but you sees your places. The details are in the privacy policy.

Why aren’t my iPhone and iPad in sync?

Both devices need to be signed in with the same Apple Account, and iCloud has to be turned on for GeoLicious (iOS Settings → your name → “iCloud”). Syncing runs in the background and can take a moment – longer the first time and with a large archive. Opening the app once on both devices helps.

The app’s settings, by the way, deliberately apply to each device on its own; places and stays are what gets synced.

How do I back up my data?

Under “Settings” → “Database” → “Import and Export”, you can export everything as GPX or JSON. The JSON backup is the most reliable way back into the app; GPX also opens in map apps. Importing again adds and updates rather than duplicating. Backing up and importing are part of Unlimited.

How do I delete all my data?

Under “Settings” → “Database” → “Import and Export” → “Delete All Data”. This removes every place and stay from this device and from iCloud – and with it from your other devices. It cannot be undone, so back up anything you want to keep first.

I have duplicate places. How do I get rid of them?

Press and hold one of them in the Places list and choose “Merge location”. Its stays move over to the other place, and the duplicate disappears.

Purchase

What’s free, and what does Unlimited add?

For free you can record up to 20 stays with every feature to try out – including automatic check-in, statistics, search and widgets. Unlimited is a one-time purchase with no subscription: unlimited stays, plus backup and import.

I bought Unlimited, but it’s locked on my new device.

Open “Settings” → “Unlimited” → “Restore Previous Purchase”. The purchase belongs to your Apple Account and applies to every device signed in with it.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases go through the App Store, so refunds do too: at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Moving and importing

What happens to my data from GeoLicious 1?

When you update, GeoLicious takes over the old database on its own – including one the first version kept in iCloud Drive – as long as nothing has been saved in the new version and in your iCloud yet. Any further device then receives the data through iCloud.

You can also bring in an older backup (.db) by hand: “Settings” → “Database” → “Import and Export” → “Import from the old version”. Places you already have are recognised by name and position and keep their icon, radius and settings.

Can I bring my data over from Arc Timeline?

Yes. Export your data in Arc Timeline, put the export folder into the Files app, and pick it under “Settings” → “Database” → “Import and Export” → “Import from Arc Timeline”. Visited places and stays come along, recorded routes don’t. Importing again creates no duplicates. Automatic check-in starts out off for imported places – turn it on for the ones that matter to you.

Other

Which devices does GeoLicious run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. There is no Android version.

How do I search for a date?

Just type it into the search field of your stays or the map: “2024” shows a whole year, “May 2020” a month, “2023-07-25” a single day. Places that happen to have such a name are still found too.

Still have questions?

If nothing here fits, write to me. Ideally straight from the app via “Settings” → “Contact by Email” – then your device and versions are already in the message.
